Today is Monday, the start of any busy week. A young girl finds herself in the beginning of the rest of her life. The skin on her arm is wet and scaly, and she thinks little of it. She runs down and out for the bus, as a ghost moves among its skeptics. Everyone in her freshman class teases her for her little mermaid lunchbox, clenching the case as someone tears the strap in two.
She makes a nuisance of herself in class as clouds roll in. "I'm thirsty," she begs, unheard. The scales shimmer on both her arms, and water and butterflies fill her stomach as she spends ages trying to quench her thirst. She calls home, sick, the storm growing in and around her. Her parents leave her hanging, and without a second thought, she slips past the door, the rain calling her outside.
The rain beats down on her fish-like skin as she runs home. Slits on her neck quiver as her breath grows shorter with each step. The rainwater climbs to her waist, and her lungs collapse. Her heart races as she realizes her fate. She leaves her ribbon on the tree in the backyard and looks at her hands, fingers bound together. Her family sees her for the first time in her life, and her father asks her what she's going to do. She looks at them, thunder welling inside her as she dives in, screaming her last human words:
"I'm going to be okay."
